Course Summary

This course unit introduces students to the basic skills needed for the preparation and delivery of pastoral sermons. It features video lectures by Rich Nathan and other material from a variety of preachers and teachers. Students are asked expected to present the recordings of two sermons they have preached publicly or privately.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Identify the elements of an effective sermon and its delivery

  2. Explain the role of the sermon in worship

  3. Review a range of typical sermons in terms of the basic principles of preaching

  4. Compare and contrast a range of preaching styles in relation to their pastoral context

  5. Construct an effective pastoral sermon for a given context.

Course Information

This is a 10-week course which is offered fully online. There will be no lectures either live or by Zoom for this course and students can study at their own Pace provided, of course, that the course is completed by the end of the summer break. Assessment dates must also be adhered to, however the assessments have been set so it's not the interfere with Christmas or New Year activities.
