This course unit introduces students to the basic skills needed for the preparation and delivery of pastoral sermons.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Identify the elements of an effective sermon and its delivery

  2. Explain the role of the sermon in worship

  3. Review a range of typical sermons in terms of the basic principles of preaching

  4. Compare and contrast a range of preaching styles in relation to their pastoral context

  5. Construct an effective pastoral sermon for a given context.

  5. Sermon Construction – introductions, outlines, dominant thought, conclusions

  6. Preaching style and context
